After graduating high school, Kathryn attended a local community college in Illinois completing two years of general education including obtaining her EMT certificate. She gained additional experience working for ambulance services and in emergency rooms.

At age 19, she traveled up to Alaska and worked three contracts on a commercial fishing vessel in the Bering Sea. During that time, she fell in love with Alaska and decided to relocate permanently in 2000. She spent several summers working in canneries as a processor, but also as an EMT. She assisted several different medical providers and decided to further her career and become a Physician Assistant with a focus in rural health. She completed the Community Health Practitioner program through University of Alaska in Fairbanks, and spent more than 10 years providing care and teaching emergency medical technician courses in remote areas throughout the State of Alaska. She later completed her prerequisites for the PA program and graduated from University of Washington in August 2017. She was class president, graduated with high honors, and was the recipient of the John B. Commbs leadership award. Dr. Coombs was the Associate Dean for Regional Affairs and Rural Health in the School of Medicine, and had a long record of promoting the PA profession.

This award is presented to students who have become role models to their peers, have assumed some of the responsibilities of leadership during their training and have carried out those responsibilities with integrity, cooperation and understanding. Kathryn and her family have lived in the Mat-Su Valley since 2008 and she is excited to provide care to her community. Kathryn and her family enjoy hiking, camping, and fishing during the long summer days in Alaska.
